Home Remodeling in Redding, CT

Most of the towns we work in have a downtown. Redding has four villages, sixty miles of trails, and about 8,700 people spread across thirty-two square miles.

That changes what remodeling looks like here. Houses sit far apart, at the end of long driveways, on wooded lots. A lot of them were built before 1850. Almost none of them are on public water or sewer, which means adding a bathroom is never only about the bathroom.

We already work in Ridgefield, Bethel and Danbury, all of which share a border with Redding. The houses here are older and the sites are more complicated, and both of those are things we like.

Older Houses, Longer Driveways, and Your Own Septic System

Redding has some of the oldest and most varied housing in the area, which means no two projects start from the same place.

Throughout town, we commonly see:

  • Center-chimney colonials and saltboxes around Redding Center

  • Federal and Greek Revival homes along Cross Highway and Black Rock Turnpike

  • Nineteenth-century mill housing in Georgetown

  • Post-and-beam farmhouses, often with the original barn still standing

  • Postwar and mid-century homes

  • Newer construction on larger lots

Many of these homes have been added onto over two centuries. An 1810 colonial with an 1880 rear ell and a 1972 family room has three framing systems under one roof, and knowing where those seams are shapes how we plan the work.

Redding properties also come with site conditions that affect what's possible:

  • Private well and septic on nearly every property, so septic capacity and reserve area often decide whether a new bathroom or bedroom can be added

  • Wetlands throughout town, which bring setbacks and Inland Wetlands review

  • Ledge, which affects what an addition costs before finishes come up

That's why we start with how the house was built and how you live in it, then plan the work so the two agree. You can learn more about our remodeling process and how we guide homeowners from planning through construction.

Common Remodeling Projects in Redding

Kitchen Remodeling in Redding

Antique farmhouse kitchens in Redding are usually small, often low-ceilinged, and frequently built around a chimney mass that isn't going anywhere. Somebody will always tell you the wall can come out. Sometimes it can. Sometimes it's carrying the second floor and the answer is a different plan.

Bathroom Renovations in Redding

Adding a bathroom in Redding is a septic question before it's a design question. The number of bedrooms and fixtures a system was sized for is on record, and going beyond it means engineering and health department review, not just a plumber.

Once the system side is settled, the rest is the part nobody sees: waterproofing done properly, ventilation that actually vents, and a shower pan flood-tested before a single tile goes down. Old houses are unforgiving about water.

Additions and Primary Suites in Redding

Redding lots are big enough that space is rarely the constraint. Septic reserve area, wetlands setbacks, and ledge usually are.

The projects we see most here are primary suite additions on houses that were built when one full bath upstairs was plenty, rear expansions that give a farmhouse a kitchen and living space that work together, and second-story or over-garage additions on the postwar houses.

Whole-Home Remodeling in Redding

Some Redding houses don't need one room fixed. They need two centuries of additions to start agreeing with each other. When a family plans to stay put for the next twenty years, it usually makes more sense to rework the whole floor plan at once than to fix it in pieces over a decade.

Design Styles That Work in Redding Homes

Redding homeowners usually want updates that fit the house, not a completely new look.

In the older homes near Redding Center and Redding Ridge, most projects are traditional with modern updates. In the more wooded parts of town, people lean warmer and more modern:

  • Large windows

  • Exposed beams and structure

  • Natural materials that suit the setting

  • Barn-inspired details, which make sense in a town where so many properties have a barn

The most common request we hear isn't about style. It's some version of "I don't want it to look like we renovated." To get that right, the new work has to match the proportions and details of the existing house, so choosing materials and finishes matters as much as the construction.

That's what our Design Center is for. Bring your own ideas, or come in with just a rough budget and we'll help you figure out the rest.

A Redding Project We Loved

Getting called back for a second project is the best review we can get, and doing it for homeowners who understood the build as well as we did made it a genuinely good few months of work. We added a primary suite and a guest suite to their farmhouse in Redding, built to read like they were always part of the house.

Living in
Redding, CT

Redding has been called the Vermont of Connecticut, and it's easy to see why. Mark Twain built his last home here in 1908 for the quiet, and the town has worked to keep it that way. Today Redding has two state parks, more than sixty miles of trails, and decades of open space that the town chose to protect instead of develop.

Samuel Clemens spent his last years in Redding at Stormfield and endowed the library that still carries his name.

Connecticut's oldest state park, established in 1887, on the site where General Israel Putnam's troops wintered in 1778 and 1779. Locals call it Connecticut's Valley Forge.

A working farm and education center founded by the actress Carmen Mathews, with programs that most Redding kids go through at some point.

Georgetown

The old Gilbert & Bennett wire mill village in the southwest corner of town, with a National Register historic district, a run of good restaurants, and a street grid that looks nothing like the rest of Redding.
